It’s time to tell you a little about me and why I decided I needed a place of my own on the internet. I’ve thought about writing a newsletter for several years. Being an Enneagram 5, I love to research things, and I’ll research things to death to avoid actually having to do the thing. I’ve always known that I could never complete the research because that would mean that I would actually have to take some action. Procrastinator? Yes, that would be me. So here goes.
I’m an almost retired (a couple more years) mother of one and grandma of six. I guess my daughter didn’t like being an only child. I moved to the Dallas-Fort Worth area a decade ago to be close to my family and to leave my past firmly in the past.
As a child in school, I couldn’t wait for the Scholastic Book Fair sale at school. I treasured the books that I was allowed to buy and read them repeatedly until the pages were worn. I can remember going to the library and checking out as many books at a time as I was allowed to and then asking my mom to take me to the library the very next day because I had already read them all.
My love of reading has been with me my whole life. Sometimes though, life has gotten in the way, and I wasn’t able to read like I wanted to. My last several years of reading have taken on new meaning for me, and I’ve never enjoyed it more than I am enjoying it now. I’m a member of the Modern Mrs. Darcy book club since its inception (I’m sure this isn’t the last you will hear about this), I read a bunch of books every year, subscribe to bookish creators on Patreon and Substack (upcoming posts I’m sure) and the last couple years I discovered podcasts. You don’t want to know how many different podcasts I subscribe to; it isn’t pretty. My day isn’t complete unless I read one of the many books that I own (mostly e-books), listen to one of my favorite bookish podcasts, and in between all of this, dream and plan for my future travels and reads.
I’m a couple of years away from retirement (I can’t wait). I’m feverishly researching the indie bookstores that I want to visit, the literary places I’d like to travel to, all the while soaking up all the bookish learning and fun I can through the MMD book club, Patreon participation and the newsletters that I read. It all makes my soul so very happy.
I hope you’ll join me on this adventure. Yes, writing a newsletter will be an adventure as I’m a number cruncher (accountant) and not a writer, but heck, I’ve researched writing long enough that I ought to be an expert by now. I’ve got posts planned about summer beach reads (summer is my favorite season for reading), in-depth posts about books that have made a lasting impression on me, book lists for just about any season or genre of reading, a weekly email with fun bookish links and many more things to feed the soul of a reader. There are places that I love that I want to explore through travel and books, and I’ll share all of that with you too.
I’m so excited about all of the bookish fun, and I’m happy you are along for the ride. Feel free to share this or any post and invite your friends to join the fun with us.
It sounds like you have an incredibly great reason to write a newsletter. There are so many of us that enjoy books and always wondering where to go next. The fact that you've already done the exhaustive research you are likely more than ready. I look forward to following along and getting some leads on the next great book adventure.
I’m so excited for you! Your joy and enthusiasm is contagious and will carry you far! Welcome to the online bookish community! Book people are really the very best people!
