Happy Friday, readers,
Wow. Another long work week for me. I worked extra during the week, so I have one more Saturday to myself before I have to start working every Saturday for the upcoming tax deadlines; I’m so excited I can hardly contain myself. I’m so close to finishing a couple more books. Reading will occupy much of my weekend as I want to finish both of them.
I won’t bore you with the mundane details of my life, as it has been pretty dull this week. Eat, sleep, and work is all I’ve had time for. Now, on to the tidbits I’ve found on the internet this week:
An “absorbing read” is very subjective. What I enjoy reading, another might not. Thankfully, there are more books published each year than we can read in a lifetime.
One can dream, can’t they? I’d love to visit one of these places and stay at one of the bookish-themed hotels.
One of the best things about reading blogs and newsletters is the people I’ve met in my travels over the internet. Sarah Miller writes the Can We Read? newsletter, a “guide to children’s books and how to build a reading culture in your home.” She says that she “wants to help children’s books find the right readers.” If you have kids in your life, give her newsletter a try. It’s a joy to read.
If you are into true crime podcasts, here is a list of eight to get you started. I’ve listened to two, and both were quite enjoyable.
I just adore Anne Bogel of all things Modern Mrs. Darcy. She has written a reading journal that publishes on September 21, 2021. It’s designed by a book lover for book lovers. I can’t wait until I get my copy.
I’ve seen these people in bookstores before; what a novel concept. They write poems on the spot. How creative is that? I love the vintage typewriters too.
If you are a Jane Austen fan, I’ve got two newsletters for you to try out. The Austen Connection and Counterpoise. Such fun and interesting reads. Even if you aren’t an Austen fan, give it a whirl. You might soon be.
It’s o.k. to read new genres, try new authors, be adventurous in your reading. Don’t let wasting a little time hold you back from trying something new. I gave several tips in this newsletter about reading slumps and trying new things.
I enjoy reading about how things happen behind the scenes in the publishing world. This article tells about building a Young Adult bestseller.
I hope you have a great weekend, make time to read some outstanding books, and thoroughly enjoy one of the last weekends of summer. Coming up in September, look for newsletters about book clubs (how to find one, how to start one, what makes a book an excellent book for a book club), more of “an author and her book books series,” a feature on children’s and middle-grade books, and other bookish fun for your reading pleasure.
Happy reading!
