Recent Discoveries in Bookish Newsletters

Hi friends,

I’m finishing up my trip to Southern California, and while I’m sad to leave family, friends, and the beautiful weather, I’m always happy to get home. I guess Dorothy said it best, “there is no place like home.”

One of the things I do periodically is to search out other bookish newsletters on Substack, and I’ve found many that I’ve really been enjoying lately. There are so many bloggers and newsletter creators online that when I find one that brings something unique to the world of books, I want to share the bookish goodness with all my reader friends. Maybe one or more of these will pique your interest too:

Well Read with Anna Bonet

Anna reads many of the same books I read (my reading twin), so that is what appealed to me. She also reads other books that I wouldn’t normally read, and she writes about them in such a way that makes me want to read more of her recommendations.

Well Read with Anna Bonet
Four brilliant beach reads
Someone once said to me that they associate a beach read with ‘forgettable books’. The kind of books you speed through, dizzy with the instant hit of fiction dopamine, but feeling nothing in its wake. You’re glad to have had the rush, but come a few weeks later, you don’t remember a single detail, sometimes forgetting the name of the book altogether…

Read, Watch, Binge by Luiza Campos

I enjoy seeing Luiza’s newsletter in my inbox weekly. She combines her love of reading, movies, and streaming and creates a fun read that always brings new recommendations for books to read and plenty to watch and stream when I have free time.

Read, Watch, Binge
The polemic surrounding Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story
Uninspired and quite frankly, boring, Ryan Murphy’s Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has clocked over 300 million hours of views, officially becoming one of Netflix’s most streamed shows ever. The show tells the story of a serial killer and cannibal…

All By Our Shelves by Rosalynn Tyo

Rosalynn reads many of the same books that I read (another reading twin), and she never fails to highlight at least one book that I learn more about and want to read.

All By Our Shelves
Good Grief
“Nobody wants to hear about anybody else’s grief.” Or so says Vivian, narrator of Elizabeth Gilbert’s novel, City of Girls. Ahem. I respectfully disagree. I love to read books about loss. I’m talking devastating, life-altering losses, like the death of a partner or parent, financial ruin, eviction—but also, the less visible kind, like the loss of identit…

Your Weekend Reading by Kerry Bennett

Kerry’s newsletter offers great book recommendations to give you plenty of ideas for your weekend reading. Some newsletters feature an in-depth review of one book, while others feature several books to choose from.

Your Weekend Reading
Fiction About the People We Don't See
Choosing a favorite genre of fiction feels like choosing a favorite child: it’s impossible and unconscionable (except scifi and dystopia. I’d gladly exclude those rascals from the family photo.) But one of my favorite genres of writing is the perspective shift: when you visit a familiar scene but all of a sudden you’re hearing from a secondary character…

Inverted Gentleman Reviews by T. C.

I’m still not sure what an “inverted gentleman” is, but T. C.’s newsletter is a joy to read. T. C. writes about books and movies and goes in deep with his reviews. He discusses points that most reviewers gloss over or completely neglect and leaves me thinking about the book long after reading the review.

Inverted Gentleman Reviews

Book Chat by Marg Moon

Marg’s newsletter is a new discovery for me and is similar to mine as she likes to write about books, other newsletters, and other book-adjacent topics. She also features a yummy sandwich, dessert, or other food item she cooked, along with the recipe she used.

The New Dork Review of Books by Greg Zimmerman

I don’t read many books written by male authors, and I read even fewer newsletters written by men; now that I’ve discovered this newsletter, both of those are changing. I stumbled across Greg’s newsletter a few months ago, and I’ve enjoyed catching up on his backlist and checking out the books he reviews.

The New Dork Review of Books
Mount Chicago, by Adam Levin: One of the Funniest Novels I've Ever Read
I have some questions for you, Mr. Levin. You're a very good writer. You KNOW you're a very good writer. You're also a very self-aware writer. So when you're as good a writer as you are, and you fully understand what you're doing and its effect on your reader as well as you do, why do you insist on aggravating your reader just to the point where he want…

It always takes me a few days to get back into the swing of things after a vacation, no matter how long or short it is. I’m already looking forward to the weekend as I see a lot of reading in my future. Until next week, happy reading!
