Exciting September Releases to Look Forward to
Along with a few bits and a special treat for Louise Penny fans
Welcome readers! There’s been an influx of new subscribers the last couple of weeks; I’m so happy you’re here checking out this little corner of the bookish internet. I’d love to know more about you and what you’ve been reading. You can tell me in the comments below.
In the US, Labor Day weekend is the weekend that most people recognize as the end of summer; some look forward to what the new season brings, and others long for more of what summer represents in their lives. I’m glad to get closer to the cooler days of fall; I’m not a fan of Halloween, and the holidays seem to come all too quickly, but overall, fall is my favorite season.
I’m working a lot of hours right now, so I’ll keep this shorter than usual. Here are a few books I haven’t read yet, but all are going on my TBR for this fall. All four are by authors I have read and loved in the past, so I have high hopes for each.
The Most Likely Club by Elyssa Friedland (9-6-22) - I loved Friedland’s previous books, The Floating Feldman’s and The Last Summer at the Golden Hotel, and from the reviews I’ve read so far, her latest is just as good as the others. Set at the 25th high school reunion, it moves away from family a bit and focuses more on friends, what their lives became and what each would do differently if they could. I have it on hold on Libby; now I just need time to read it.
The Enigma Affair by Charlie Lovett (9-6-22) - Set in the book world, Lovett’s latest book, a historical thriller, begins when “a librarian and a professional assassin team up to solve a seventy-five-year-old Nazi mystery and stop a nefarious opponent from wreaking havoc on the world.” Reviews on Goodreads say it’s filled with suspense, twists and turns, and betrayal and that it’s well researched and about a subject seldom found in other WWII-related books.
The Two Lives of Sara by Catherine Adel West (9-6-22) - This is the sophomore book from West, and if you read and enjoyed Saving Ruby King, the reviews I’m reading about her newest book say that you will want to read this one too. From the publisher, “with a charismatic cast of characters, The Two Lives of Sara is an emotional and unforgettable story of hope, the limitations of resilience and unexpected love.” I’m looking forward to reading this one for sure.
The Ways We Hide by Kristina McMorris (9-6-22) - I’m a huge historical fiction fan, and I’ve sung McMorris’ praises in a previous An Author and Her Books newsletter. Lisa Wingate, another favorite author of mine, says this book is “a riveting trail of intrigue and illusion, danger and historical mystery.” I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley, and I’m about a third of the way through and loving it so far. Based on true events and meticulously researched, her writing style is reminiscent of her previous books, yet the stories are so different. I love it when I find an author whose books I enjoy reading, and it’s even better when they have a several-book backlist as she does.
I’ve been in a few book clubs before and encountered all seven types of people from this article. How many have you had the pleasure of meeting?
I was late in becoming a fan of Anthony Bourdain, but I’ve made up for it in the past couple of years. I’ve read a few of his books and watched many of his TV shows. Here’s a list of a few books by others if you miss his writing.
Even though I read very few physical books, I collect bookmarks. One can never have too many books or bookmarks. I might have to give this a try.
Notes from Three Pines is a brand new short-run newsletter by Elizabeth Held and Aya Martin Seaver, where they and others will count us down to November 2022, when Louise Penny’s latest book, A World of Curiosities: A Novel, publishes. Come along for the ride, enjoy the stories from some incredible creators in the Bookstacker community, and share your love of Chief Inspector Gamache and the Three Pines community with others. I can’t wait!
I’m counting down to September 15th to remove one more tax deadline from my list of four that remain before I retire. It’s less than a year now, and time seems to be going so slow; it’s just my anticipation, as I’m sure it is moving at the same speed it always does. Tell me about what you’ve been reading in the comments, and I hope you have a great reading week this week. Happy reading!
Some of the links in this newsletter may be affiliate links. That means that if you click through and purchase anything, I may earn a small commission. This costs you nothing and helps me feed my voracious reading habit, and for that, I thank you.
I'm reading old and oldish things right now so I'm happy to get recommendations for new things, all the writers you listed are new to me. Thank you! I just finished "Happy Go Lucky" by David Sedaris and just started "How to Cook a Wolf" by MFK Fisher - published during WWII - I'm curious what Bourdain would have thought of it.
So excited to learn about the Notes From Three Pines newsletter as I’m a huge Louise Penny fan and can’t wait for the new Inspector Gamache installment in November (particularly the discussion of the food that always seems to figure prominently in these tales!).Thanks for all your recommendations and insights!
