I really enjoyed the Station Eleven tv series adaptation. A new take on Willy Wonka should be fun. And All The Light We Cannot See. That book felt like it might translate well to the screen. I like seeing the adaptations as of interpretations of the books. That way, even if they’re disappointing, the comparison is fun.
As I've heard others say, when you decide to watch the movie/series, assume it won't have much to do with the book. Then if/when it does resemble the book somehow, you will be pleasantly surprised. I'd rather be surprised than disappointed. lol
I think that's the best book to tv/movie list I've seen for 2023! I'm most excited for Daisy Jones & the Six. It's warm where I'm at and I'm looking forward to picking up my Rx glasses. I can't wait to see again!
We had “thunder sleet” here in Tulsa and I didn’t leave the house for 3 days. Chilly weather everywhere. Glad you got to enjoy it. Great recommendations as always!
We had a little thunder sleet here too, along with lots of just plain sleet and freezing rain. I didn't leave the house either for 3 days and now I start tax season behind again. But this is the last one, so I can handle most anything at this point.
We’re expecting -8°C (17°F) where I am, in Romania. So staying indoors with my current read, “Nine Perfect Strangers” by Liane Moriarty which, speaking of adaptations, I hear has a nice 9-episode show on Prime Video.
Very nice list of upcoming adaptations indeed. I agree with you that the books are always better. But I still like to see a decent try. I always read the book first though!
Oh, I can't imagine living some where that it gets that cold. I guess if you do, you learn to adapt to it, but I know for sure I don't want to learn how to adapt. I try to read the book before watching the movie etc. too!
I have a very bookish weekend ahead! On Saturday I'll be record the next Page Turners + review, we read The Drowned Forest by Angela Barry out of Bermuda. On Sunday I'll be hosting my book club discussion of Remarkably Bright Creatures. And I will be diving into my Read Soul Lit TBR for Black History Month 😊
Pale Blue Eye on Netflix was quite good but I have never read the book so I can't make a comparison there. Based on the movie, I would hope the book is amazing.
I went to the University of Michigan for college and Ann Arbor's definitely worth a visit. A lot of the old small college town charm has been replaced by modernity, but you'll still find plenty of enjoyable things to do.
Oh, that sounds wonderful. I love exploring places I've never been and when it's described as still having some of it's small college town charm, I'm ready to go. Just not in the winter! lol
Hi Gayla, I'm so glad I found your blog--thanks to you following me. (Thank you!) Can't wait to become a regular reader and inhale all your book news. Have a great weekend--it's raining here (of course, Portland, Oregon) but I'm going to play Scrabble with friends this afternoon with wine after. A good day!
I'm glad I found your newsletter too. Anytime I mention that I think I could live in Washington or Oregon, people always tell me that it rains and is gloomy all the time. I spent a week and 1/2 in both states during the summer andwe had fantastic weather. The only problem was this was the summer with all the fires and it was so bad at times that when we were visiting the water falls along the river, there was one time we couldn't even see the other side of the river for all the smoke. I am definitely going back again (hopefully sooner rather than later) as there is much more sightseeing to do that I missed that summer. I also want to take one of the Columbia River cruises. It looks like so much fun. It sounds like you had a great weekend, friends and wine!
Well, I do have to be honest--it does rain a lot from October to March. But summer is spectacular! And temperatures are usually mild year-round. I'm so sorry you were here during that smoke--it was awful! But definitely do come back and go up the Columbia--it is well worth it!
Generally, I'm with you on the whole book-to- movie adaption question. I usually enjoy the book more BUT if I remember to consider then as two separate works and the movie captures the spirit or feeling if the book, I can enjoy the film on its own merits. A good recent example for me has been the series based on Elena Ferrante 's "My Brilliant Friend "
I really appreciated reading the "Overdue"interview . All your links this week are fun!
Thanks for being here Betsy, I appreciate you. I agree with you about considering the book and the movie two separate works, less disappointment that way. I haven't read any iof Elena Ferrante's books before. I tried reading one several years ago and I couldn't get into it right away so I set it down and never went back to it. Maybe I need to try again.

Yay! That’s a terrific milestone to look forward to!

NPS is on Hulu in the US! I haven’t watched yet. How’s the book?

That sounds like a perfect weekend, enjoy!
Thanks for all the great links! Also, I don't know what's in the coffee cup, but it looks delicious!
I agree, the contents look delicious. A picture of a cup full of hot cocoa (assuming that's what it is) gets me every time.

I've never heard of Pale Blue Eye, but I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the recommendation!

You do get used to it. We have very warm homes so you barely feel it, unless you have to go somewhere and then it’s a real challenge 🙈
Added some of those books to my want to read list....which is already sooo long as it is. Haha.
Super. Yes, I agree, TBR's are too long; we'll never get through all the books we want to read.
