Hi readers,
I’m swamped at work heading into the September 15th deadline, so I’ll keep this week’s newsletter short on the commentary. I’m reading Jamie Brenner’s newest book, Gilt, and really enjoying it. I adored her last book, Blush, and while the storylines are different (wine versus jewelry), the novels are very similar in style and storyline elements. And best of all, both are beach reads for sure.
In the August 2nd newsletter, I highlighted six new books for August. If you missed it, you could read it here. I had many more on the list, so I saved a few of them for this newsletter. These books include historical fiction, thriller/mystery, and a little magical realism, sure to please many readers.
The War Librarian by Addison Armstrong (8-9-22) - I read Armstrong’s previous book, The Light of Luna Park, and was excited to read her newest one; it did not disappoint. This dual timeline book seamlessly weaves between 1918 and the more recent storyline set in 1976 and tells the stories of the first war librarians and the first women accepted into the Naval Academy. I enjoyed this book so much and can’t wait to see what is next for Armstrong.
What She Found by Robert Dugoni (8-23-22) - There are a lot of Dugoni fans in the reading world, and his latest book is book nine in the Tracy Crosswhite series. I haven’t read this one, but I have read two of his books in the past, and both were excellent. If you like police procedurals/suspense, this might be a good series to add to your TBR.
The House of Fortune by Jessie Burton (8-30-22) - Fans of Burton’s The Miniaturist have been waiting since 2014 for this companion novel, and from the Goodreads reviews I’m reading, readers love it. It picks up eighteen years after The Miniaturist ends and tells a coming-of-age story set in Amsterdam in the 1700s, with plenty of family secrets, deceit, and redemption.
Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen (8-30-22) - From author Glendy Vanderah, “With a dash of her signature magic, Allen dishes up a touching story that hits the sweet spot between heartache and healing.” Fans of Allen’s books have been waiting since 2015 for her next one, and I’ve read several reviews that say this book was well worth the long wait.
Nothing More to Tell by Karen McManus (8-30-22) - I’ve been on a thriller/suspense kick lately. I’ve read two of this author’s previous books and was excited when I received an ARC of this one. This YA thriller is set around the murder of a favorite teacher and the fallout surrounding it. The main character returns four years later to begin her dream job on a true crime show and sets out to uncover who the murderer is. The deeper she goes into her investigation, the more secrets she uncovers. I loved this one, and it kept me turning the pages way too late at night.
I hope you enjoyed this look at a few more books publishing this month. Even though magical realism is “hit or miss” with me, I’m going to give Other Birds a try; did you find any to put on your TBR?
I’ll be working weekends from now through the October 15th deadline. I hope to still land in your inbox weekly, but things could change depending on my workload. I looked back through the archive, and I managed to publish a twice-weekly newsletter during this same time last year. I don’t know how I did that, as it doesn’t seem possible this year.
I hope you have a good week, stay cool, and read a great book or two. Happy reading!
Some of the links in this newsletter may be affiliate links. That means that if you click through and purchase anything, I may earn a small commission. This costs you nothing and helps me feed my voracious reading habit, and for that, I thank you.
I keep bringing McManus books home from the library—they have such striking covers and I do love twisty mystery/thrillers—but then I keep not getting to them?! This inspired me to bump The Cousins up my pile & hopefully I'll actually get to it this weekend. Thanks for the nudge!
These all sound like so much fun, thank you! Apologies if this is lame but I wanted to share my own newsletter as a recommendation! Every week, I recommend one novel along with a film and song pairing that I think fits it's flavour profile. Maybe check it out?
