I've been in several throughout my 3 years, and I'm currently in Historical Fiction and Young Adult. I think I'm going to try the Middle-Grade group next year as I do read a lot of MG on my own.
I like the MG books for book club because I can usually read MG in one day/sitting! It’s easy to fit in with my other commitments! Some of the histfic books I received from the book club were long and not very good, so I decided to try something different!
I am enjoying reading your posts from the past. A postal book club sounds interesting. Some people might be interested to know about USPS Media Rate which is cheaper than First Class in most cases. While the official USPS site is probably the best source, this explains it pretty well. https://www.wikihow.com/Ship-Media-Mail
Thanks Mark. Yes, there is media mail but it is only for books, a journal can't be included. It doesn't mean that people don't include a journal, but I do know that the post office will randomly open media mail to make sure there are only books inside. Also, with the slowdown of the USPS I don't know that I'd trust media mail to get there when it would need to be there. It used to work fine prior to Covid, but since then, things have gone downhill and I don't see it changing in the near future.
Thank You! I have used media mail before but only to send books. I have never had anything sent back but never put in other stuff I guess. It sounds like you may not be a fan of Mr. DeJoy. :)
I'm not a fan of a lot of things, and he is definitely one of them. Supposedly that could be ending soon after the first of the year, I certainly hope so.
Connecting it back to a book and an author. I am currently reading "The 5th Risk" by Michael Lewis. I think he is one of the very best author's I know at establishing and humanizing characters amidst a complex story. Money Ball was popular for people interested in Baseball. The 5th Risk is remarkable and is sort of related to Mr DeJoy.
I've seen his books, but I haven't read any of them. After looking at all he has written, I think I just might like his writing. Thanks for the recommendations.
If I were to recommend one it would be "Boomerang". While he wrote another book about the topic that was made into a movie "The Big Short", in "Boomerang" he writes the story of the 2008 housing collapse. He writes from the perspective of the historic nature and tendencies of different cultures, namely Icelanders, Germans, Irish, Greeks,I and Californians. In choosing that approach to telling the story he revealed the different sides of how the crisis emerged. It was really great.
I love the MMD postal book clubs! I did the histfic group for a couple of years and now I’m doing the MG group for the second year.
